Method & caveats

• Marine casualties are accident-investigation occurrences published by national boards (e.g. Canada TSB, UK MAIB, NZ TAIC); where an IMO is recorded we link the occurrence to the vessel in our register. Severity (Critical / Serious / Moderate / Minor) is assigned from recorded fatalities, serious injuries and occurrence class.
• Fatalities are as-reported. Where a source publishes deaths as a structured field we take it directly; for others (some accident-summary feeds) the count is parsed from the incident summary rather than a dedicated field, so the “Lives lost” total is indicative, not audited.
• Detentions are port-state-control detentions; counts here are absolute. For detention rates normalised by fleet size, see the Flag-State Performance list.
• Coverage caveat: these are the casualties published by the covered investigation boards, not the entire world record — counts are a floor. Occurrences with no IMO, or against ships outside our register, are still counted in the totals, but only IMO-matched ones link through to a vessel.
