Data Licences
The terms on which our database is made available — and the open sources we credit.
Two things live on this page. First, the licence under which The Maritime’s own database and analytics are made available to you. Second, our acknowledgement of the open datasets and media we use under licences that ask for attribution. They are not the same thing, and the second does not dissolve the first.
The Maritime database — all rights reserved
The Maritime’s database — the compilation, selection, structure and arrangement of the data, together with the scores, indices, valuations, models and analytics we derive from it — is our proprietary work, protected by copyright and by the sui generis database right, and their equivalents worldwide. Substantial and continuing investment stands behind it. We publish no open-data licence over it, and we operate no public API, feed or bulk export.
Your access grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive licence to view the database through the interface we provide, for your own internal reference. It grants you no right to extract, copy, re-use, resell, redistribute or republish a substantial part of the database — nor to repeatedly take insubstantial parts — no right to make it available to any third party, and no right to use it to train, fine-tune or evaluate any machine-learning or AI model, or to build, populate or benchmark a competing product or dataset. Automated access of every kind — scraping, crawling, harvesting, mirroring — is prohibited. These limits, and the enforcement that stands behind them, are set out in full in our Terms of Service.
Open sources we acknowledge
Some of the inputs we draw on are published by their providers under open licences that ask for attribution. We acknowledge them, with gratitude, here.

Attribution does not open our database
Crediting an open source here satisfies that source’s licence for the material we took from it. It does not place The Maritime’s database in the public domain or under any open or Creative Commons licence. The sui generis right in our own selection, arrangement, verification and enrichment is independent of the licence status of any single input, and is reserved. Other material reaches us under commercial agreements that carry their own terms; where a provider requires acknowledgement, it is credited under the terms of our agreement with them, and those sources are not enumerated here.
