
How clean is the fleet, segment by segment? The aggregate carbon-intensity view — capacity-normalised CO₂ intensity (cAER) per segment, from verified EU-MRV emissions reports (ships ≥5,000 GT on EU/EEA voyages), alongside a modelled A–E band distribution for the non-reporting fleet. Coverage is shown per segment so the reported sample is never passed off as the whole fleet.

Three of five segments reported higher carbon intensity than a year earlier, and those three carry half the reported ships: bulkers +5.4%, gas +2.9%, container effectively flat at +0.04%; only other cargo and tankers came down, each by about 1%. The 10.3 fleet-wide figure is composition-driven — other cargo alone is 45% of the reported ships at a median of 15.7, while the other four segments together sit at 5.9.
Capacity-normalised CO₂ intensity (cAER — grams of CO₂ per deadweight-tonne nautical mile, the IMO cAER basis) across the reported ships in each segment. Each row runs from the segment's median to its mean: the median is the robust figure, the mean is clipped to a physical ceiling because a barely-sailed ship's tiny distance denominator would otherwise blow it up. The gap between the two dots is the segment's internal spread, printed beside each row. Lower is cleaner.
Tankers show the widest spread on a sample large enough to carry it: the mean sits +36.8% above the median across 479 reports, with none clipped. Gas is wider still at +49.2%, but on 71 reports. Neither of the two widest-spread segments had a ship clipped from its mean, so the spread is not an artefact of the clipping the * marks.

A wide spread means a minority of high-intensity ships sits well above the typical ship in that segment; a figure resting on fewer than 100 reports is shown quiet because it is thin.

This is the one band view where segments genuinely differ, so the rows are ranked by their E share — least efficient first. Kept in its own card, never blended with the reported figures above. The band is a fixed percentile split within each size cohort, so the distribution shape is fixed by construction — a definitional artifact of the banding, not a measured mix, and not a figure any segment can win or lose on. What it does carry is which ship sits where. This is our own peer-relative ranking, not the official IMO CII grade.
