Strait of Hormuz Attacks Claim More Lives

Two seafarers have been killed in an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the known death toll from attacks on commercial shipping in the region to at least 18 since the conflict escalated earlier this year.

The incident occurred on the Saudi-owned VLCC Sidr, which was one of two supertankers carrying Saudi crude reported hit late Monday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed the deaths, stating that the two casualties initially reported had been confirmed as fatalities.

Investigation and Response

Authorities are investigating the incident, and no environmental impact has been reported. The Saudi foreign ministry stressed the necessity of halting escalations and respecting international maritime safety and the security of global energy supplies.

The attack on the Sidr is the latest in a series of incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route. Shipping organizations have repeatedly warned that civilian crews are increasingly bearing the consequences of the conflict, with at least 18 seafarers killed since the attacks on merchant shipping intensified earlier this year.

The conflict in the region has disrupted energy supplies, driven up prices, and fueled wider inflation concerns. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region, with some ships taking alternative routes to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.
