BP Awards Egypt Campaign to VALARIS DS-12 Drillship

In a new offshore contract, BP Exploration Delta Limited has awarded a five-well campaign to Valaris using the drillship VALARIS DS-12, to be deployed in Egyptian waters beginning in the second quarter of 2026. The contract is projected to span approximately 350 days and totals about $140 million, inclusive of a mobilization fee and with three optional wells embedded in the deal.

Valaris states that with this award, all four of its near-term available high-specification drillships are now under contract. The company characterizes DS-12’s return to Egypt with BP as a continuation of a successful collaboration, underscoring Valaris’ focus on deploying its most capable rigs in premium contracts.

How DS-12 Won — Rig Capability, Track Record, and Commercial Fit

While the public announcement does not detail BP’s internal evaluation, industry practices and public sources allow us to reconstruct the likely path to award:

1. Prior Performance and Client Relationship

Valaris and BP have a history of cooperation in Egypt and other regions. A contractor’s operational reliability, safe execution, and trust built over earlier campaigns often tip the scales in bidding rounds. For example, DS-12 was employed by BP in drilling the El Fayoum-5 discovery well in 2025, which encountered promising gas zones (Messinian reservoirs) at depths around 2,900 m.

2. Technical Compatibility — High Spec & Rig Design

DS-12 is classified as a high-specification drillship, meaning it is equipped with advanced systems suited for complex deepwater or challenging geology work. Operators typically assess whether a rig’s design envelope (water depth, dynamic positioning, well control systems, drill string load, BOP architecture) matches the campaign’s geologic and operational profile.

3. Competitive Commercial Terms

In bidding, day rates, mobilization fees, incentives, penalties, and flexibility (option wells) are major negotiation levers. Valaris likely submitted a package balancing a favorable price and risk allocation (e.g. logistics, spares, downtime assumptions) acceptable to BP while maintaining margin.

4. Compliance, Safety & Regulatory Standards

To be eligible, the rig must satisfy classification society rules, international MODU codes, and host-country regulatory requirements. For example, drilling systems are guided by classification society standards such as the ABS Guide for the Classification of Drilling Systems. Likewise, mobile offshore drilling units are governed by the 2009 MODU Code, which sets forth structural, stability, safety, and operational criteria. The rig’s class notations, hull integrity, equipment certifications, and periodic surveys all feed into whether a bidding rig is technically acceptable.

5. Financial & Mobilization Readiness

Operators will vet the contractor’s financial strength, insurance coverage, ability to mobilize swiftly, access to crew and parts, and logistics readiness. A bidder unable to reliably mobilize or maintain operations would likely be excluded or discounted.

6. Contract Flexibility & Options

By including three optional wells, BP gains flexibility while Valaris commits to supporting contingent execution. A proposal that embeds such optionality—with predictable pricing and availability—can be more attractive.

Taken together, these elements form the typical gate: only rigs that are technically capable, class-compliant, commercially compelling, and operationally ready tend to win.

Strategic and Regional Context

DS-12 has a solid track record in Egypt: as part of BP’s West Nile Delta efforts, it drilled El Fayoum-5 in 2025, confirming new prospective gas zones. In Egypt’s offshore push, increased exploration and well campaigns align with national priorities to boost domestic gas production and energy security.

This fresh contract signals BP’s continued investment in Egypt’s offshore frontier and feeds into Valaris’s broader strategy of maintaining high utilization of its premium rigs.
