The Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship AS Dream sank about 90 nautical miles west of Paphos on the evening of October 30, and all ten crew members were rescued.
Cyprus's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre received an alert at 20:15 and launched a search and rescue operation under the Nearchos plan. A helicopter and a police vessel were dispatched, and the nearby Panama-flagged merchant ship MSC Hannah III was called to assist.
The crew comprised nine Indian nationals and one Cameroonian. Under JRCC Larnaca's coordination, they were brought safely to the police launch Pentadaktylos and then taken to Limassol port. Ambulance personnel and paramedics examined the survivors on arrival and found them in good health. The crew members were later handed to their relevant state authorities, and the embassies concerned were notified.
Cause and ownership unknown
As of November 2, no cause for the sinking had been reported. Details about the vessel's owner or its routes were not known, and Cypriot authorities had not notified any ongoing investigation.
The ILO Database lists an unresolved abandonment case involving AS Dream from September 2025 in Ashdod, Israel, with eight seafarers from Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, and Turkey aboard. Tanzania's maritime administration said in September 2026 that it was seeking an updated status from the ITF, and the case remained unresolved as of October 28.
For charterers and brokers, the absence of a disclosed cause or owner information leaves the vessel's risk profile unclear, and underwriters typically reassess exposure when a ship sinks without a determined cause.
