Definition

A mature tropical cyclone that develops in the North Atlantic or eastern North Pacific Ocean, characterised by sustained wind speeds of 64 knots or greater. Hurricanes are classified on the Saffir-Simpson scale from Category 1 to Category 5 based on maximum sustained wind speeds.
