Overview
Stephen B. Roman was a Canadian bulk carrier operating on the Great Lakes owned by Lake Ontario Cement Company. The vessel was initially launched as Fort William in 1965 and owned and operated by Canada Steamship Lines. She carries dry cement to Great Lakes ports, and is named after prominent Canadian mining engineer Stephen Boleslav Roman. The ship was taken out of service in November 2018.
Compliance
On 12 December 2017, the bulk carrier "STEPHEN B. ROMAN" reported an injured crew member who fell in the stairs while the vessel was transiting Lake Ontario in harsh weather. The vessel initially anchored 4 nautical miles SSW of Port Burwell, ON to medevac the crew member, but then resumed its voyage towards Port Colborne, ON to rearrange medevac in the Welland Canal.
On 28 November 2015, the bulk carrier "STEPHEN B. ROMAN" reported one of its shipboard generators on fire while on Lake Erie. The fire was extinguished and the generator repaired.
Recorded marine occurrences naming this vessel.
Composite Risk
Multiple adverse factors, or a hard ship-specific signal, lift this hull above the fleet norm.
A coverage-weighted blend of the single component we could read for this hull; the weights renormalise over only the components present, so a thin read is never inflated and a hull is never credited a “safe 0” for a signal it has no row for. This headline is flagged low-confidence (a thin or structural-only read) and should not be treated as a verdict. Higher means riskier. Derived in-house from government-open port-State-control, flag, sanctions and our own vessel data; weight it by the coverage above.
Commercial
Price it in the Route Planner between any two commercial ports: ballast and laden legs, two fuels at live bunker prices, port and canal costs, the weather on the way, and the TCE set against the market.
